BRICK Awards, 2002
Sustainable Building Category
UWE Design Studios
The 'Brick Awards' recognise and reward excellence in design and construction using brick. The new building was one of three shortlisted for the sustainability category in 'The 2002 Brick Awards Scheme', beating around 20 other entries.
The Studios is believed to be the first building in the UK to be built using an innovative construction method where the bricks are glued together into panels instead of using cement. The technique is quicker than conventional methods and allows large spans without lintels.
The building also has a range of other important environmental features – such as maximum use of natural daylight, a natural ventilation strategy and rainwater collected on the roof for flushing toilets.
Richard Parnaby, Head of Architecture at the University of the West of England, says he is delighted that the building has been nominated for the award, “This building has lived up to our vision of attaining the highest possible environmental standards as well as providing a valuable learning resource for those in the Faculty. It is gratifying to have our commitment and vision of sustainability recognised by those in the industry.”
