Planning permission is now being sought for the refurbishment and expansion of a 1970’s concrete framed office building in the Stokes Croft area of Bristol.  The design of the current building is unattractive and the arrangement of the blocks create security issues at night with dark spaces and insufficient lighting.

The proposed development would accommodate offices, residential units and retail spaces, re-integrating the building with the streetscape as well as the socio-economic context of the area.  This approach is intended to support the regeneration of the area.  The design also includes communal spaces and a new-build element of townhouses to promote

The mixed-use proposal attempts to improve the appearance and utility of the main facade through the addition of a winter garden, which would be a laminated timber structure (pictured left).  The primary glulams are located on the gridlines of the existing building with a linked glazing pattern to emphasize the vertical rhythm of the elevation.

The residential component of the scheme features the addition of ‘roof top units’ which are of lightweight timber framed construction with natural timber cladding and glazed timber units.  These units are designed to add interest to the roofscape whilst exploiting views out over the city.
