National Wildlife Conservation Park
The creation of the National Wildlife Conservation Park (NWCP) by Bristol Zoo Gardens represents the advent of a completely new generation of zoos. This unique development is based on six fundamental principles:
A conservation action centre – the Park provides visitors with practical knowledge, advice and tools to inspire and enable them to participate actively in conservation and to understand that, as individuals, they can each make a positive difference.
Ecosystem-based exhibits – each of the exhibit areas has been carefully selected to represent an ecosystem of major conservation significance.
Links to field conservation – each of the ecosystems exhibited within the park is linked explicitly to a field conservation project somewhere in the world, where NWCP either leads or supports a group of conservation and development organisations in close partnership.
An immersive experience – the Park provides a unique experience, engaging visitors at an emotional, intellectual and physical level, through naturalistic and interactive exhibits and close encounters with the natural world.
Sustainability – NWCP is the first zoo in the world to be designed, constructed and operated in a wholly sustainable way, from power generation and waste management to local procurement and carbon sequestration.
A global strategy in action – NWCP is the first zoo in the world to be based entirely on the vision set out in Building a Future for Wildlife, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ ten-year Conservation Strategy.
No other wildlife attraction in the world combines all of these elements in the same place and at the same time and we are thrilled to be a part of this pioneering project.
