Richard Parnaby
Richard Parnaby was educated at Liverpool University and the University of Oregon. After 6 years studying and working in the United States and Canada before he returned to the UK to form the architectural partnership Brown & Parnaby in 1980. The practice developed a particular expertise in environment friendly design – for example the British Steel low energy house at Garden Festival Wales (1992) and Rhondda Heritage Park Visitor Centre (1994).
From 1982 to 1987, he combined practice with teaching as a lecturer in the Welsh School of Architecture and in 1996 took up a full time post at the University of the West of England (UWE) where he is now Professor of Architecture. He played a leading role in the development of UWE’s unique joint undergraduate course in architecture & planning and its BArch course He also contributed to a new programme combining architecture and environmental engineering which was launched in September 2007.
Richard was appointed as the first chair of the Design Commission for Wales (2002-6) and is a member of in Commission’s Design Review panel. He has advised the Minister of Finance on achieving the highest standards of sustainable design for a series of office buildings for the National Assembly across Wales.
Having served for two terms on RIBA Council and four years as a member of the main board of the Institute Richard is currently vice chair of the Education Committee and a member of the Validation Panel for UK schools of architecture. He is currently a member of the council of the Standing Conference of Heads of Schools of Architecture and a member of the QAA benchmark panel for architecture.
Richard has exhibited work at the Venice Biennale and the Royal academy Summer Exhibition.
