Artist’s Studio

In partnership with the clients, Swedish Artist and Landscape Architect, Katarina Frank and Professor Colin Fudge and the Greenheart building company, White Design has designed a self-contained, single storey art studio.

Viewed from the outside, the building reads as a simple ‘box’ that is raised off the ground, with cedar cladding boards running vertically up the elevations and over the mono-pitch roof.

The building is entirely constructed from timber: internal surfaces are lined with plywood and cavities are filled with insulation made out of recycled paper waste, making the building super-insulated.

Large north-facing windows bring daylight into the internal space, minimising the need for artificial lighting. At the same time, the windows are positioned and electronically controlled so that the building can be naturally ventilated.

The cedar is sourced locally rather than imported from North America.
